It's not easy being vegan and a deli clerk. It's even harder being a single mother with no steady income. Even steady part time income helps a ton.
So, during my first evening on the job, I spent four hours stripping the meat of chickens from their carcasses, literally ripping their corpses apart, discarding skin, bone, gristle, wings, veins, and any remaining organs.
Yum.
I got through it by apologizing to each chicken for the suffering it endured in its short life and for the trauma of its death, and by blessing its flesh to nourish the minds, bodies, and spirits of all who consumed it, filling them with love and compassion.
Will it lead to more people eating less flesh?
I can hope.
